Commission report confirms society’s disillusionment with the functioning of institutions

This year’s Report released by the European Commission on the Rule of Law in Cyprus confirms that our country still has many steps to take regarding the functioning and independence of institutions, the level of democracy and the rule of law.

We note that the European Commission’s first recommendation to Cyprus is to strengthen the independence and accountability of the Attorney General’s Office. This confirms AKEL’s criticism of the Attorney General’s handling and decisions in important cases of recent years, such as the black spy van case. In addition, the Report itself finds, as far as the fight against corruption is concerned, gaps in investigations and prosecutions, but also the fact that there have been no results concerning serious corruption cases. These are two of the findings of the Commission’s Report that confirm Cypriot society’s widespread frustration with the functioning of institutions in our country.

The government must heed the recommendations contained in the Report and respond with action. On its part, AKEL will continue its initiatives, the tabling of proposals and exercise of parliamentary scrutiny, guided by the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance.
