Citizens are paying the cost of the government’s unforgivable incompetence

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th May 2021, Nicosia

Vaccination is the only way to defeat the pandemic definitively and put an end once and to all the restrictive measures that are pushing society’s patience to the limit. Our appeal to every citizen of our country is that he/she should be vaccinated.

Our country’s vaccination program, however, is moving at an unacceptably slow pace. The government failed to achieve all the goals it itself had set for the vaccination coverage of the population.

As far as the situation with the vaccinations portal is concerned, it has reached the point of being ridiculous. Despite all the assurances that were given that the situation would be rectified, problems are constantly appearing, while the vaccination portal failed to open. The situation became worse after the telephone line for setting vaccination appointments was abolished.

The government’s failure with regards the vaccination program now has greater implications and consequences, given the measures promoted by the government which link citizen’s movements with vaccinations.

Citizens, society and the economy are paying the cost of the government’s unforgivable incompetence in organizing the vaccination program and its failure to drastically support public hospitals. Furthermore, they are paying the cost of the many sloppy and contradictory measures approved and the lack of proportionality with respect to restrictions on rights and freedoms.
