Change with Andreas Mavroyiannis

8 May 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Central Committee of AKEL, after a democratic, fruitful and thorough discussion, confirmed that the steadfast strategic objective for the 2023 Presidential Elections is change. Change with social characteristics and a progressive approach. Change to put an end to the deadlocks created by the DISY party government.

The agreed position of the C.C. of AKEL was and continues to be the choice of an independent personality, known for his integrity and ability to address the political forces seeking change and the wider society of Cyprus in general. The Central Committee of the Party has decided to propose the candidacy of Andreas Mavroyiannis to the members and friends of AKEL. During the secret ballot where 98 members of the Central Committee voted, the candidacy of Andrea Mavroyiannis received 60% of the votes.

Andreas Mavroyiannis has a rich political biography and international experience. He has worked with a number of Presidents of the Republic while serving his country as a diplomat and negotiator. He is a profound expert on the Cyprus problem and is unwaveringly committed to the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem as soon as possible, on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation. A. Mavroyiannis also has considerable administrative experience, as demonstrated by his successful handling as Deputy Minister of State of the Christofias government for the 2012 Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.

In the coming weeks, thousands of members and friends of AKEL will be called upon to express their position on the Presidential Elections and this proposal. The Central Committee will re-evaluate the outcome of the dialogue and the Pancyprian Congress that will convene on 5 June will take the final decision.
