AKEL expresses its appreciation and gratitude to all mothers

On the occasion of Mother’s Day, AKEL expresses its appreciation and gratitude to all mothers in our country. The irresistible love, selflessness, sacrifice and service is exemplified in the face of every mother. At the same time, AKEL points out that the respect and recognition of the role of motherhood on the part of the State and society cannot be merely declaratory, sentimental and commemorative.
Cyprus needs a modern welfare state that actively recognises the social role of motherhood and supports mothers with modern policies and measures. This is precisely why we are asserting the following:
- Extension of maternity leave from the first child and the introduction of a paid parental leave scheme.
- Effective implementation of legislation to protect working pregnant women, pregnant women and new mothers from employer arbitrariness.
- Effective measures to provide support to single-parent families.
- Creation of infant and child care and employment infrastructures and schemes by the state and local authorities at affordable costs and hours.
- A scheme to subsidise child and infant care costs for low and middle income families.
- Expansion of the custom of all-day schooling.
- A proactive campaign against domestic violence.
Today is not only a day of celebration, it is also a day of reflection. AKEL, with its eyes fixed on all mothers who today are living under difficult conditions, in war zones, refugee settlements, prisons and shelters, on mothers from low-income strata who are struggling to provide the bare necessities for their children, but also on all mothers of our country and the world, wishes peace, health and prosperity to them all.
