Biography of AKEL-Left-New Forces Candidates for the 2019 European elections

giorgos georgiou Georgios K. Georgiou

Georgios K. Georgiou was born in Nicosia in 1963 and comes from Afaneia and the village of Assia in the occupied territories. Today he lives in Mazotos. He is married to Kalomira Ioannou and they have three children.

From 1983 until 1987 he studied Literature at the University of Athens and went on to study History at the University of Cyprus.

He served as a teacher for Greek and History in Secondary Education.

During his studies he actively participated in the Progressive Movement of Students in Athens and subsequently in the Progressive Movement of Teachers. He was a member of the C.C. of EDON Youth Organisation.

In 2011 and 2016 he was elected MP with AKEL-Left-New Forces in the Larnaka district. He is a member of the Parliamentary Committees for Foreign Affairs, Education, Agriculture and Institutions, while he was also a member of the Parliamentary Committees on the Environment and Legal Affairs. He is the head of the Cyprus Parliament Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.

He has been a member of the Board of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK) for three years.

He is a member of the Central Committee of AKEL and the Larnaka District Committee of AKEL. He was elected as Head and is coordinating the Larnaca District Council of the Union of Cypriot Farmers (EKA). He participates in the Education and Environment Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL.

athos georgiouGeorgiou Chrysanthos (Athos)

Chrysanthos Georgiou was born in Nicosia in 1970. He is married to Yioula Georgiou and they have two children.

He graduated from the Sofia Medical University and obtained the title of General Surgeon at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 2007 he received a PhD degree. Since 2012 he is an honorary clinical research associate of the Imperial College of the United Kingdom and Honorary Assistant Professor of Surgery.

He is a doctor – general surgeon at the Nicosia General Hospital. He is President of the Cyprus Surgical Society and Secretary of the Pancyprian Society of Traumatology and Emergency Surgery and national representative of Cyprus to the European Society of Traumatology and Emergency Surgery.

He is the President of the Cyprus National Addictions Authority since 2011, while he has been a member of the Board since 2004. He has been a member of the Board of the Cyprus Resuscitation Council. He was President of the Technical Committee on Health issues for the Cyprus problem, General Secretary of the Pancyprian Federation of Student Associations and Secretary of Students Abroad. Since 2018 he has been a member of the National Committee for Hepatitis C.

He is a member of the Central Committee of AKEL since 2010 and is Head of the Health Affairs Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL. He was a member of the Executive Bureau of EDON Youth Organisation.

Kızılyurek NiyaziKızılyürek Niyazi

Kızılyürek Niyazi was born in 1959 in Potamia. At the beginning of 1964, due to the intercommunal clashes, his family moved to the enclave of Louroujina where he lived as a refugee until 1974. After 1974, he settled with his family in the village of Argaki.

He studied at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Bremen, where he completed a postgraduate and doctoral dissertation on the Cyprus Problem. In 1990 he graduated with a PhD and a Summa Cum Laude distinction.

Since 1995 he has been teaching at the Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cyprus and is currently in the rank of Professor. He served as President of the Department of Turkish Studies and as Dean of the School of Humanities.

He published more than 20 books in several languages, most of which deal with the Cyprus Problem. Apart from his writings on Cypriot History, Nationalism and Contemporary Turkey, he has written more than 100 scientific publications.

He collaborated with the film director Panikos Chrysanthou and together they made the documentary titled “Our Wall”, and together with Michalis Theodorou, they co-founded the bilingual (Greek and Turkish) Cypriot publishing house “Eterotopia”.

In 1997 Niyazi Kızılyürek was awarded the Peace and Friendship Prize Abdi İpekçi for his efforts to promote Greek-Turkish friendship and the rapprochement of the two communities in Cyprus. In 2006, the French state awarded him the distinction “The Knight of the Academic Phoenix” for his scientific contribution and his struggle for peace in Cyprus. He is a member of the European Parliament Culture since 2015.

giorgos koukoumasKoukoumas Giorgos

Giorgos Koukoumas was born in 1983 in Larnaca and comes from the occupied village of Angastina.

He is a graduate of the Law School of Athens and holds a Postgraduate LLM degree from the University of London in Public International Law.

Since 2014, he is Assistant to a Member of the European Parliament responsible for following the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament. He has participated representing AKEL in international and European conferences, as well as in the actions of the Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left in the European Parliament.

He was President of the Pancyprian School Student’s Coordinating Committee and President of the Council of the National Cypriot Student’s Union in Athens. He was President of the Progressive Movement of Students of Athens and a member of the Central Council of EDON Youth Organisation. He is Secretary of the Cyprus-Cuban Friendship Association.

He is a member of the Central Committee of AKEL and the AKEL Famagusta District Committee. He is a member of the European Affairs Bureau, the European Parliament Bureau, the International Relations Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL, as well as of the Ideological/Educational Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL.

 

marina nikolaouNicolaou Marina

Marina Nicolaou was born in 1986 in Limassol.

She is a political scientist, graduate of the Department of Sociology and Political Science of the University of Cyprus.

She worked as a scientific assistant at the Cyprus Labour Institute and the Nicosia Youth Multicentre of the Youth Board of Cyprus.

Since 2016 she has been working as a political adviser to the Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left in the European Parliament and is a member of its Secretariat. She follows the Committee on Regional Development, the EP Delegation for Palestine and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.

She has been actively participating in public affairs since her school years as a member of PEOM and then EDON in Limassol. During her studies she developed a rich trade union activity through the Progressive Movement of Students. She participated in the Council of the Department of Sociology and Political Sciences and in the Council of the Faculty of Humanities as an elected representative of the students. She has been a member of the Press and Cultural Bureau of EDON and has been a member of AKEL since 2004.

Since 2016 she has been a member of the European Parliament Bureau of the Central Committee and has represented AKEL and EDON at European and International conferences.

neoklis sylikiotisSylikiotis Neoclis

Neoklis Sylikiotis was born in 1959 in Limassol. He is married to Adoula and they have a son.

He studied Mechanical Engineering at the Aachen University in Germany.

During his studies, he actively participated in the founding of the Cypriot Students’ Association of Aachen and the Federation of Cypriot Student Associations of Germany, of which he was President. From 1988 to 1991 he was General Secretary of the Pancyprian Federation of Student Unions (POFNE).

From 1992 to 1995 he served as the Central Organizational Secretary of EDON.

Since 1995 he has been a member of the Central Committee and since 2010 a member of the Political Bureau of AKEL. From December 2013 until 2015 he was a member of the Central Secretariat of AKEL. He was also the Head of the Education Affairs Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL and a member of the Cyprus Education Council.

He served as Minister of Interior in the Government of Tassos Papadopoulos and as Minister of the Interior and Minister of Commerce, Industry, Tourism and Energy in the Government of Demetris Christofias. During the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union he chaired the Ministerial Councils in the fields of Energy, International Trade and Competitiveness (Internal Market and Industry).

From 2014 until today he is a Member of the European Parliament and Vice-President of the Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left. As a Member of the European Parliament, he is a full member and coordinator on behalf of the Group of the European United Left in the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), and is an alternate member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. He is the President of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Palestine, and a member of the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.
