The attempt to glorify the fascist crime committed against Cyprus will not pass!

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 20th January 2016, Nicosia

praksikopima 1974 cprYesterday, the mass media reported that a 95year old German male nurse-sergeant is being taken court for his possible complicity in crimes committed at the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp. Today, in the year 2016 in Cyprus, our denunciations have been confirmed that with the support of the Anastasiades-DISY party government and the Archdiocese the construction of a heroes monument is underway to honour the Commandos who attacked the Presidential Palace in the coup d’état on 15th July 1974; the commandos who had as their goal the assassination of Archbishop Makarios III and the overthrow and dissolution of the Republic of Cyprus.

This development is a continuation of the attempts by the Anastasiades-DISY party government to distort the historical reality and glorify the activity of Grivas and EOKA B. This government is equating the perpetrators of the crime committed with the victims of the coup d’état. It is equating all those who turned their weapons against democratic legality with those who sacrificed their lives in defense of democracy. This act is an extremely provocative action that clashes with the democratic feelings and sensitivities of the overwhelming majority of our people.

AKEL condemns this development in the strongest possible terms, which with the sole responsibility of the government, is leading to an unnecessary and highly damaging division, at a time when everyone’s attention should be focused on the huge challenges facing our country.

No matter what, AKEL, fully aware of its responsibility towards those who have passed away and more specifically mainly towards the future generations, clarifies in all directions that it will do everything possible to prevent the construction of a heroes monument dedicated to anyone who acted against democracy and against constitutional legality. We call on the rest of the political forces, who also reject the government’s provocation, to organize joint initiatives to prevent the government’s machinations and plans.
