All versions of the far-right are a danger to democracy, working people’s gains and peace

The rise of the ultra-right to power in Italy is causing concern among all the democratic people of Europe and the world. Meloni, the leader of a neo-fascist party that indeed is nostalgic for Mussolini, just like Trump, Orban, Le Pen and the rest of the far-right are not only not anti-systemic, but express the most repulsive version of a system that will intensify anti-worker policies, inequalities and racism.

AKEL points out that the Nazis in Germany also came to power through elections, but that did not make them anything other than what they really were: fascists and dangerous for the people. All the versions and shades of the far-right, no matter how they disguise themselves, represent a real danger to democratic freedoms and working people’s gains, to human rights and peace.

The responsibilities of the EU, whose economic policies have resulted in poverty and inequalities, which the far-right exploits to spread its poison, are grave. The responsibilities of the Italian Right, which is in alliance with the extreme-right, are also grave, as elsewhere in Europe where the Right-wing of the European People’s Party (EPP) is cooperating or is even in government together with the far-right, while at the same time encouraging the ultra-right agenda with its xenophobia, conservatism and anti-communism.

The identity of views and positions of the ruling DISY party and far-right ELAM party in Cyprus, on an increasing number of issues, is a prime example and proof that ELAM operates as a subsidiary and reserve force of the government and DISY.

AKEL calls on all the progressive and democratic people of Cyprus to strengthen the resistance to fascism, to the causes that give birth and feed it and to all those who associate themselves with it.
