AKEL’s proposal to suspend foreclosures until July 31 approved

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 23rd April 2021, Nicosia

Precisely because borrowers are exposed to the arbitrariness of the banks, AKEL weeks ago foresaw the need to submit a proposal to extend the suspension of foreclosures until 31st July. Our proposal was approved yesterday by the Plenary of the House of Representatives.

At the same time, AKEL managed to secure Parliament’s commitment that the draft law long ago submitted to protect borrowers and ensure the right to housing, together with the proposals tabled by other parties on foreclosures, will be discussed as a priority in the new Parliament. This was the best way out of the situation created by the government’s hasty and unacceptable action to withdraw the Bill on Courts.

Social democratic EDEK party shouldn’t accuse AKEL. It should blame itself because it yet again trusted the government and voted in favor of the government’s state budget over a bill that the government eventually withdrew. EDEK was evidently fooled by the government, as it had been previously deceived on the issue of insolvency. For sure EDEK knows that two wrongs don’t make a right….

EDEK’s attempt to replace the government bill with its own bill would not have yielded any result as it is obviously unconstitutional. People should know what is really at stake, namely that when a bill is deemed unconstitutional then the existing bill applies.

So let’s focus on real facts. AKEL will continue with consistency to work for the creation of an effective web of protection for borrowers from foreclosures and for the resolute tackling of the arbitrariness of the banks.
