AKEL welcomes the European Parliament Resolution on Varosha
AKEL was calling for a debate on Varosha since September
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27th November 2020, Nicosia
AKEL welcomes yesterday’s Resolution approved by the European Parliament, which by an overwhelming majority denounced Turkey’s illegal actions to open Varosha and calls for its actions to be revoked. The fact that the European Parliament has conveyed in a strong way its rejection of the Turkish machinations to promote a two-state solution, that it clearly supports the bi-zonal, bi-communal federation as the sought solution to the Cyprus problem and stresses the need for a resumption of the talks from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana is also of paramount importance. Indeed, the EP Resolution called on Turkey to commit to the relevant call issued by the Secretary General of the UN.
AKEL and the GUE/NGL in the European Parliament were calling for the immediate debate of the issue of Varosia since last September and in three consecutive Plenary Sessions. However, only after the opening of the Famagusta coastal front by Turkey did the other Political Groups of the European Parliament agree that the issue be put on the agenda and indeed with the title that AKEL insisted on, namely “Escalation of tensions in Varosha after the illegal actions of Turkey and the urgent need for a resumption of talks “.
Congratulations to all those who worked so that the European Parliament approved this strong Resolution and for the powerful messages it sends out. Of course, the vote cast against the Resolution by three far-right MEP’s, including the sentenced Golden Dawn MEP Lagos, made a dreadful impression.
