Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th April 2015, Nicosia

society cpr reconciliationAKEL welcomes President Anastasiades’ action to announce Confidence Building Measures in favour of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots. AKEL agrees with the content of the CBM’s and hopes to see a positive response from the Turkish Cypriot community towards them.

Such actions are moves in the right direction, given that they strengthen a climate of trust between the two communities on the island and in this way contribute to the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

Despite the usefulness of the Confidence Building Measures, AKEL stresses once again the need for substantive negotiations to begin as soon as possible as only through talks for a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of bi-zonal, bi-communal federation can we achieve the goal of liberation and reunification of our homeland.
