AKEL visits enclaved children’s schools in occupied areas

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th October 2015, Nicosia

rizokarpasoAn AKEL delegation composed of Christos Christofides, Head of the Department on Education of the C.C. and member of the Political Bureau, Chrysanthos Zanettos Secretary of AKEL Famagusta District Organization, Skevi Koukouma, member of the C.C. and MP, member of the Parliamentary Education Committee, Yiannakis Zaouras member of AKEL Famagusta District Committee and  C.C. member and Christos Nikolaou, District Secretary of EDON Famagusta Youth Organization, visited today the Primary and Secondary school in the village of Rizokarpaso in the occupied areas. After the visit the Head of the Party’s Department on Education made the following statement:

“As with every year, this year too we are on the side of the school students, teachers and parents of the occupied village of Rizokarpaso. We are here to give our support, assistance and solidarity, but each year we feel that it is we who draw strength from the will and courage of these people. We draw strength from the example of the peaceful coexistence of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, even under difficult conditions.

Despite the individual problems, we want to express our appreciation for the generally smooth running of the Primary and Secondary school. The ongoing incomplete staffing of schools remains a serious problem. The main positive that arises is the Ministry of Culture’s intention to operate the custom of State Training Institutes (with peculiarities of course) for the afternoon support to school pupils with activities or additional lessons they need. I want to remind you that this is precisely the proposal AKEL had tabled last year in writing with our letter addressed to the Ministry of Culture.

We express our satisfaction that this proposal has been adopted.

We renewed our appointment with the children, their parents and teachers for Christmas. As far as AKEL is concerned, we will do our utmost to remain next to our schools in Rizokarpaso.”
