AKEL: the President is called upon to be consistent to the agreed basis of the solution

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 4th September 2016, Nicosia

cpr reunificationIt is obvious that the negotiations on the Cyprus problem have entered a crucial juncture. The result of the President of the Republic’s meetings with the Turkish Cypriot leader in September will to a large extent determine the future of the negotiations and the prospect of solving the Cyprus problem.

At this crucial stage we are going through, the President of the Republic is called upon to be consistent to the agreed basis of the solution. He is also called upon to demonstrate realism which should be rooted in the principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem which the Greek Cypriot side has long ago set out.

On the other hand, the political forces with their stand and behavior are called upon to contribute towards the prevalence of a climate of wisdom far from extremities, fanaticism and mutual accusations and characterizations that will rip the domestic front to pieces, a development which would be damaging to our country. With the completion of this procedure, in mid-September, the political forces, given that they will have been been fully informed by the President of the Republic, will be able to judge and assess the results of the negotiation.

AKEL will continue to behave and act with patriotism, seriousness and responsibility on the Cyprus problem, guided by its long-standing positions to reverse and lift the current unacceptable and dangerous status quo. These positions provide for a solution that will liberate and reunite Cyprus and our people within the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
