AKEL greets and welcomes the decision of the leaders of the two communities to resume negotiations. On the occasion of this development that was expected, AKEL reiterates that the Cyprus problem can only be solved through talks, which we hope this time will have a positive outcome and lead to the liberation and reunification of our country and people. Pending an official briefing, we assess as also positive the decision for more frequent meetings between the two leaders within the context of the resumption of the talks.

AKEL reiterates that the window of opportunity that has opened for the solution of the Cyprus problem must be used correctly. Without having any illusions about the serious difficulties we will face this time too in the effort to arrive at an agreed solution, at the same time we consider it as a patriotic duty that all the political forces should contribute constructively and creatively towards the achievement of the common goal of liberation from the occupation and partition.

Expediencies, negativism and syndromes of fear anything but contribute towards this end, the same as any superficial and naive approaches there and wherever they exist is also not helpful.

The conditions themselves demand steadfastness and consistency to the strategic goal for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution and to the basic principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem as these have been unanimously set out by the National Council[1]. The greatest possible collectivity in the handling of the Cyprus problem, the creation of the preconditions for the common struggle of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for the reunification of our homeland and the strengthening of our international base of support, particularly among the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, is required.
