AKEL requests a debate in the European Parliament on the Turkish provocations in the EEZ and threats on Varosha

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th September 2020, Nicosia

In view of the continuing escalation of Turkey’s provocative actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus and the growing threats being made to colonalise the fenced off area of Varosha, AKEL through its delegation to the European Parliament and the Confederal Group of the European United Left, submitted (4/9/2020) a proposal for a discussion to be conducted on the issue in the EP Plenary.

The proposal for discussion, which is requested to be completed with the approval of a resolution, is: “Turkey’s escalating provocative actions in the EEZ and Varosha and the pressing need for a resumption of the negotiations aimed at an overall solution to the Cyprus problem.”

AKEL’s goal is the de-escalation and the termination of the Turkish provocations, the prevention of new fait accompli and the resumption of talks with the aim of resolving the Cyprus problem as soon as possible.
