AKEL on the plenary of the Central Committee regarding the electoral threshold

Statement of Stefanos Stefanou, member of the Political Bureau

AKEL C.C. Press Office 31st October 2015, Nicosia

AKEL CCThe C.C. of AKEL, in view of the discussion underway in relation to the electoral threshold for entry into the House of Representatives, discussed the proposal tabled by DISY party to increase this level to 5%. In addition, the C.C. of AKEL discussed the problems that exist in the functioning of the House of Representatives and in the political life of the country in general.

The C.C. of AKEL:

  1. Considers that changes should be made in order to improve the functioning of the House. Towards this end, AKEL has prepared, and will submit to the political parties, a comprehensive proposal to improve the Statutes that set out the functioning and deliberations of the Parliament
  1. In the context of the rationalization of political life and addressing the problems that exist, the C.C. considers the increase of the electoral threshold necessary. At the same time, however, it considers that the proposal tabled by the DISY party to increase the threshold to 5% is excessive.

The CC authorized the Political Bureau to carry out consultations for the determination of a threshold lower than the 5% in an effort to achieve a broader consensus.
