AKEL on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th November 2020, Nicosia
Every year on this day represents a milestone so that we can ascertain what has been actually been done over the previous period to address violence against women.
This year’s experience, together with its peculiarities, has demonstrated that the theoretical positions and strategic plans have not managed to effectively combat this phenomenon.
Hundreds of women have been victimized as a result of domestic violence and forced to be confined at home with the perpetrators of this violence. At the same time, the state and its structures have failed to put forth an adequate framework to provide protection and immediately respond to the hundreds of cases which have sought help.
For yet another year and despite the pressures that have been exerted on the Government, the inaction concerning the submission of a comprehensive legislative framework on all forms of violence against women continues, while our country continues to have exceptions in force as to the ratification of the Istanbul Convention.
As AKEL we will continue to participate constructively with the submission of proposals in the effort to record progress on issues related to violence against women as we have done all this time through the tabling of legislative proposals and daily highlighting of the weaknesses and gaps that exist.
