AKEL General Secretary meets with a delegation from the Federation of Environmental Organizations

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou had a meeting today with a delegation from the Federation of Environmental Organizations of Cyprus (OPOK) and expressed AKEL’s long-standing support of the whole of the environmental movement and OPOK in particular which represents the majority of environmental organizations in Cyprus.

The President and members of the OPOK Council raised some of the key issues that concern the OPOK affiliated organizations such as the Akamas National Forest Park Plan, illegal developments, public access to environmental information and others. In addition, the Federation expressed its disappointment with the meager financial support provided for in the state budget towards environmental organizations.

On behalf of AKEL, A. Kyprianou, stressed that these issues concern AKEL and our objective is to highlight and resolve them. He assured the OPOK delegation that AKEL will exert further pressure on the Government to increase the financial support towards environmental organisations. The General Secretary of AKEL informed the Federation that AKEL has already called on the competent Minister Mr. Kadis to the Parliamentary Environment Committee to discuss the issue of Akamas, an issue that is of particular concern to the Party. He reiterated that AKEL will continue its efforts to protect the entire Akamas area.

The delegation of AKEL also included Neoklis Sylikiotis, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL and Christina Nikolaou, Head of the Environment Affairs Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL.

The delegation of OPOK included its President Petros Pashias, vice-President Christos Karoulas, Treasurer Argyris Solomou and the representative of the ecological intervention Friends of AKAMA Christos Theodorou.
