AKEL on the government’s announcements on housing policy

Statement by Evanthia Savva, Head of AKEL’s Social Policy

24 October 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

In a first reading of the measures announced by the government on housing, we point out the following:

There are measures in the right direction, such as, for example, increasing the housing reserve.

However, two crucial issues are absent.

First, the establishment of a Single Housing Authority that should be in a position to plan, coordinate and implement a comprehensive state housing policy.

Second, there is no funding agency for the acquisition of housing by small and medium sized households.

Without these two, there can be no comprehensive state housing policy. The government must clarify its intentions.
