AKEL on the day after on the Cyprus problem after the crisis in Afghanistan
23 August 2021, ‘Astra’ radio station
Developments in Afghanistan are affecting the Cyprus problem in numerous ways, AKEL MP Christos Christofides pointed out speaking to Astra radio station today, stressing that Turkey’s role is once again being upgraded.
Speaking to the ‘Morning Edition’, Christos Christofides said that apart from Ankara’s relations with the Taliban, Turkey is now trying to present itself as a mediator. There isn’t a single problem in the region, he noted, in which Turkey is not involved.
Furthermore, the AKEL MP and Political Bureau member pointed out that it appears that the international community will not be as involved on the Cyprus problem as it should be because of the Afghan issue.
The latest developments, C.Christophides underlined, prove that nothing should be taken for granted on the international scene and that this also affects developments surrounding the Cyprus problem. In Cyprus, he stressed, we have to understand that neither is the current situation given either and with the policy being pursued internationally by the US and the West in general, they can also lead Cyprus back many years, as is the case in countries in our region.
He stressed that Turkey’s grip over the occupied territories in Cyprus is becoming more and more suffocating with President Anastasiades, who bears grave responsibilities for what Cyprus is going through today, offering pretexts that facilitate Turkey’s grip, but also in changing the basis of the solution of the Cyprus problem as it is being promoted by Britain.
