AKEL meetings in the Portuguese Parliament

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou continued his contacts in Portugal on Thursday afternoon with a series of meetings held in the Portuguese Parliament.
The General Secretary of AKEL had a meeting with the President of the Portuguese Parliament, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Group of the Social Democratic Party Antonio Rodriguez, the President of the Parliamentary Group of the Christian Democratic Party Nuno
Magalhães, the Vice-President of the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party Ana-Katerina Mendes, the Head of the Parliamentary Group of the Portuguese Communist Party Joao Oliveira, the President of the Left Bloc Pedro Felipe Soares and the President of Ecologist Party-the “Greens” Heloísa Apolónia.
AKEL GS Andros Kyprianou informed about the developments surrounding the Cyprus problem, the start of the negotiation procedure and the need for a solution of the Cyprus problem with the liberation and reunification of Cyprus. He explained that for the dialogue to succeed Turkey needs to support in practice the procedure of the solution, the United Nations should play an unbiased role on the basis of International Law and the two sides should have as their ultimate goal the will to achieve the solution of the Cyprus problem.
The General Secretary of AKEL put forthg the idea that with the new composition of the Portuguese Parliament a resolution be approved which, without intervening, will express support towards the struggle of the Cypriot people based on the United Nations resolutions and International Law. This initiative received a positive response and it was agreed to continue contacts. Furthermore, he informed about the basis of the solution of the Cyprus problem, namely bi-zonal, bi-communall federation, the consequences of the occupation and called on the political parties to help so that its causes and results will be reversed.
The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL, accompanied by the Responsible of the International Relations and European Affairs Department of the C.C. of AKEL Costas Christodoulides, will return to Cyprus on Saturday.
