AKEL on developments in Greece

Statement of Stefanos Stefanou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26th June 2015, Nicosia

Greece UprisingThe stand of the lenders, both of the European Union and the International Monetary Fund towards Greece, is unacceptable and extortionate. The more time passes the more it is revealed that it is not in the minds of various EU circles to offer support, but rather to humiliate Greece, indifferent to the humanitarian crisis facing the country.

The Cypriot people know the EU’s behavior towards Greece from its own experience, given that the EU bears huge responsibilities for the destruction of our country’s economy through the imposition of the haircut on bank deposits with the cooperation, unfortunately, of the Anastasiades-DISY government.

AKEL notes that in the face of this unacceptable and extortionate behaviour of Greece’s lenders, the Anastasiades-DISY government instead of standing on the side of Greece continues to keep silent and look on passively and indifferently. Evidently, President Anastasiades’ much-vaunted intervention to Greece’s partners was just a smokescreen.
