28 March 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou had a meeting today with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Mr. Colin Stewart, and a four-member delegation of the UN Good Offices Mission in Cyprus. Participating in the meeting from AKEL’s side were the Head of the Cyprus Problem Bureau of the C.C. of the Party and Member of the Political Bureau, Toumazos Tsielepis, and Stavri Kalopsidiotou, member of the Cyprus Problem Bureau and the Central Committee.

During the meeting an exchange of views took place on the current situation surrounding the Cyprus problem and the prospect of the assumption of initiatives that would enable the resumption of the negotiations. The General Secretary of AKEL reiterated the Party’s position for the resumption of the negotiations from where they had remained in 2017 and outlined to Mr. Stewart the rationale behind the proposal AKEL had submitted to the President of the Republic. Particular importance was attached during the meeting to the adoption of measures to restore the hope of all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, in the prospect of a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

Welcoming Mr. Stewart on his assumption of his new duties, Stefanos Stefanou underlined AKEL’s firm commitment to a solution within the agreed framework and cooperation with the UN Good Offices Mission towards this end.
