AKEL is totally opposed to the possibility of abolishing unanimity in the taking of decisions in the EU

13 November 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The reopening of the debate surrounding the abolition of unanimity in EU decision-making on foreign policy issues represents a negative development for our country and its interests. The abolition of unanimity will further shrink the rights and voice of the smaller EU member states, reinforce the hegemonic role of certain powerful states and ultimately deepen the structural democratic deficit in the Union’s functioning.

Such a development is in direct opposition to the well-intentioned interests of Cyprus. The Christodoulides government must not accept such a possibility and should not attempt to sugar-coat the pill by issuing vague declarations. Instead, it must consult and cooperate with other EU member states affected by the change being promoted. At the same time, AKEL calls on all the political forces in the country to take a stand on the issue.

AKEL was and is totally opposed to the possibility of the abolition of unanimity in EU decision-making. The changes that must to be made are in the opposite direction. Namely, strengthening the role of the European Parliament and of national parliaments, freeing its functioning from the parasitic activity of lobbies and giving a greater voice to the peoples of member states.
