AKEL initiative for the honorary allowance to be granted to the anti-fascist resistance fighters

AKEL MP Giorgos Koukoumas letter to the Labour Minister

7 December 2023

The issue of the exclusion of anti-fascist resistance fighters from the granting of the monthly honorary allowance has been raised by AKEL MP Giorgos Koukoumas.

More specifically, through a parliamentary question addressed to the Minister of Labour, the AKEL MP points out that the specific scheme includes as beneficiaries those who have served additional service or reservist service in the National Guard, are war stricken people and disabled war veterans for injuries sustained during the 1974 Turkish invasion, as well as prisoners of war.

Despite this, G.Koukoumas added, those who defended democracy and the legitimate government of the country against the fascist coup d’état on 15 July 1974 have continued for years to be exempted from receiving the allowance.

It should be noted that this issue has been raised by AKEL MPs on many occasion, both in debates within Parliamentary Committees and during the discussion and adoption of the State Budget, without any substantial explanation being provided to date regarding the deliberate exclusion of the anti-fascist resistance fighters from a monthly honorary allowance.

It should be pointed out noted that today, December 7, marks the Day of Democratic Resistance.
