AKEL in solidarity with the just struggle of hotel workers and culture artists
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3rd July 2020, Nicosia
AKEL stands on the side of working people in the hotel industry and culture artists who are organising mobilisations today, fighting for their rights and dignity.
We urge the government to comprehend the magnitude of the problem when thousands of seasonal hotel workers have been forced to live on 360 euros a month for some months now. This is because their employers have violated the agreement for the temporary suspension of their work in the winter period. Furthermore, the employers did not pay 2.8% of the salary of hotel workers and as a consequence they are not incorporated into the special schemes subsidising 60% of their salary. For thousands of other working people, there 8is a delay in the payment of the special unemployment benefit.
As for Culture and the people of the arts and letters, the government is delaying the payment of even this insufficient support allowance that it had long ago announced. The meagre state support for Culture is indicative of the government’s priorities and philosophy.
AKEL expresses its support and solidarity with the just struggle of hotel workers and people of culture.
