AKEL GS ON COMPLETION OF HIS CONTACTS IN BRUSSELS

During his meeting with the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz exchanged views on economic developments in the European Union and on the Cyprus problem. The GS of AKEL A. Kyprianou called for Mr. Schulz to take action in terms of the policies being promoted by Germany and on the issues of the economy at a European level. He informed about the negative consequences against the people of Cyprus as a result of the implementation of the Memorandum, which was agreed by the Eurogroup and the Anastasiades government, with particular reference to the issues of unemployment, the cuts in wages and pensions and privatization.
Regarding the Cyprus problem, the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL briefed Mr. Schulz about difficulties in issuing a joint statement with the aim of resuming negotiations and pointed out the Greek Cypriot side’s insistence on referring to a single sovereignty, a single international personality and a single citizenship.
The General Secretary of AKEL also met with President of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats Hannes Swoboda, the Co-President of the Greens / EFA Group Rebecca Harms, the Vice-President of the Group of Liberals Andrew Duff and the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Turkey, European People’s Party MEP Ria Oomen-Ruijten. The main subject of discussions was the developments surrounding the Cyprus problem and regarding the Cypriot economy. The interlocutors of the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL expressed an understanding for the positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the Cyprus problem.
Finally, the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL also briefed the Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left on all these issues.
