AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou meets the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7 November 2018, Nicosia

The General of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, within the framework of his visit to Brussels, had a meeting today with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

The General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou made the following statement:

We had a very productive and very meaningful discussion with Mrs. Mogherini, during which, as you understand, we of course discussed exclusively the situation surrounding the Cyprus problem, how the European Union could contribute first and foremost towards the resumption of negotiations and subsequently to their successful conclusion. That is to say, the conclusion of an agreement that will lead to a solution and the reunification of the Republic of Cyprus.

I want to thank Mrs. Mogherini for having reaffirmed her will and the willingness of the EU, of course, to contribute in this direction and especially with regards the issues of security which are extremely important and cause concern to both communities, both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot community.

Mrs. Mogherini has made it clear that the EU can contribute in this direction, in very specific ways, with the EU itself contributing as a factor of security in Cyprus.

I consider it was a substantive discussion. Of course I made it clear that things will be judged by the decisions to be taken by the UN Secretary-General on the basis of the discussions he has with the two leaders on the island, as well as with the guarantor powers.
