AKEL expresses its disappointment and concern over the failure of Lute’s initiative

Statement by AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Spokesperson Yiorgos Loukaides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7th September 2019, Nicosia

AKEL expresses its disappointment and deep concern about the new failure to reach an agreement on the resumption of negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem. Unfortunately, despite the fact that, according to the assessments of the UN Secretary-General himself, we were one step away from reaching an agreed solution at the Crans Montana conference, as a result, more than two years onwards, the preconditions have not been met for a resumption of the talks.

In the absence of a comprehensive briefing, we are not in a position to know the reasons for the failure of the initiative of the UN Secretary General’s envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lute. But we know how important it is that Mr. Anastasiades’ narrative this time should be in line with that of the UN Secretary-General’s. However even according to the last Report submitted by the UN Secretary-General, it does not appear that the window of opportunity for a resumption and completion of the negotiation procedure will remain open for much longer.

In the days leading up to the UN General Assembly, in combination with the briefing he will have from the envoy of the UN Secretary-General Mrs. Lute, they will determine whether the preconditions for a trilateral meeting in New York and in general for a continuation of the procedure from the point where it had remained will be created. We expect from everyone, and from Mr. Anastasiades in particular, given that we ourselves cannot determine the attitude of the Turkish side or Turkey that he will act within the framework that UN Secretary General Guterres has set out in a very clear way.
