AKEL denounces the Christodoulides government’s abstention from the UN General Assembly resolution on the Golan Heights
4 December 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
At the same time that Nicos Christodoulides from Ukraine confirms the Republic of Cyprus’ commitment to the principles of international law and calls for them to “apply in all cases without exception,” the Cyprus government at the UN General Assembly chooses to abstain from a resolution calling for Israel’s withdrawal from Syrian territory in the Golan Heights. More specifically, the resolution, which was supported by 123 countries, including the majority of European states, reiterates the demand for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Syrian Golan Heights, which it has occupied since 4 June 1967, and calls for the respect for UN resolutions.
This blatant selectivity in the positions taken by the Christodoulides government exposes the country internationally and undermines the credibility of the Republic of Cyprus in the struggle to end the occupation and achieve reunification.
It is inconceivable that the government of a country that bases its struggle on international law and denounces the violation of its territorial integrity and sovereignty by Turkey should take such a position.
AKEL denounces the Christodoulides government’s abstention on this specific Resolution and calls on the government and all political forces to realise the impact that this inconsistent policy has on our country.
