Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou following his visit to the Palestinian Embassy on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

3 December 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL and the mass organisations of the Left known as the People’s Movement of Cyprus always stand in solidarity and alongside the Palestinians in the struggle they have been waging for many years to obtain their rights. These rights are provided for in numerous resolutions of the UN and other international organizations. The Palestinian people are entitled to and must obtain their independent sovereign state, as provided for in the relevant UN resolutions, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The movement of the Left in Cyprus has always stood in solidarity with this right. Our presence here today, on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People’s Struggle, also takes on the character of denouncing the genocidal policy that the State of Israel continues to pursue against the Palestinians.

It is a condemnation of the occupation and colonisation policy being implemented by the State of Israel against the Palestinian people.

It also takes on the character of upholding the international law of universal principles and values that humanity has achieved after fierce struggles. I say this because the expansionist, criminal policy of the State of Israel against the Palestinians violates every principle of international law and violates and abolishes every human principle and value that humanity has achieved after hard struggles.

We come from a country that has been the victim of invasion and occupation.

We know very well what invasion and occupation mean.

That is precisely why we cannot comprehend that there are people in Cyprus, that there are organized groups in Cyprus, who do not stand on the side of the Palestinian people, who are victims of invasion, occupation, colonization, and genocide.

Just as we cannot understand how there can be people and organized groups in Cyprus who do not stand on the side of every struggling people who wants international law and the Charter of the United Nations to prevail and dominate,, and for these universal values and ideals to be victorious.

Mr. Ambassador, we are here today to reaffirm our support and solidarity with your struggle, which is our struggle too.
