The key point is that negotiations should resume

The decisions announced following yesterday’s meeting between the two leaders are a positive step in the ongoing procedure. The fact that they have agreed to embark on an intensive process of weekly face-to-face meetings, during which progress will be sought on all outstanding issues – as set out by the UN Secretary-General – is encouraging.

At the same time, however, we point out that the most important thing is for tangible results to be recorded. The setting out of a mutually acceptable roadmap, based on the safeguarding the entirety of the negotiation acquis, the convergences that have been recorded so far and the Guterres Framework, is the primary objective in preparatory work which we hope will unlock the prospect of substantive progress being registered.

At the same time, the fact that, after many months of discussions, it has not been possible to break through new impasses is having a negative impact on efforts to create the necessary positive political climate.

We hope that, through the intensification of direct meetings, the necessary groundwork will be completed, as the UN Secretary-General also expects, so that he may convene an expanded meeting to decide on the resumption of negotiations, because that is the crux of the matter.

Without negotiations on the substance we cannot achieve a solution.
