AKEL delegation visits the University of Nicosia
17 November 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
A delegation of AKEL, headed by AKEL Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loukaides, visited the University of Nicosia today as part of the Party’s constant contacts with the country’s university institutions. The delegation included AKEL MP Christos Christofias and representatives of the Progressive Students’ Movement.
The delegation had a meeting with the Rector, the President of the Council, as well as the Managing Director of the University.
In the context of the discussion, the AKEL delegation was briefed – among other things – about the University’s plans for the further development and enrichment of the university education provided, the upgrading of the University’s buildings and other infrastructures, the curricula provided, as well as the ongoing cooperation between the University and foreign universities for the joint provision of study programmes. Furthermore, the AKEL delegation was briefed on the University’s high level research work, as well as its socio-economic contribution to the region.
Among the important issues raised by the rectorial authorities were the need to increase the funds for student grant and its fair distribution according to socio-economic criteria, as well as the demand for an increase in the funding for research and innovation programmes. Measures which could contribute to the improvement and expansion of university education and the attraction of international students were also discussed.
After congratulating the University of Nicosia for its work, the Parliamentary Representative of AKEL expressed the Party’s great appreciation for its significant contribution to university life, but also for its contribution to the Cyprus economy and society. As he stressed, university education plays an important role in our country, contributing substantially to the GDP by attracting a large number of foreign students.
Finally, Giorgos Loukaides assured once again that AKEL will always stand by the University, and university education in general, so that they continue to develop smoothly for the benefit of society and for fulfilling the goal of establishing Cyprus as a regional educational and research centre.
