AKEL Delegation discusses the Palestinian Problem with Ambassadors of Russia and France

Renovation initiative of Ambassadors in Cyprus of the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council for the positions of AKEL in Palestine but also in Cyprus launched the party’s delegation currently under Christos Christofides said that the goal is to send a message of peace and cooperation to the wider region of the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean.
In his statements to the Cyprus News Agency made after the meeting the AKEL Delegation had with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation, Christos Christofides stated that AKEL has undertaken a campaign of meetings and discussions on the Palestinian problem with the Ambassadors of the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council in Cyprus. He noted that the Palestinian issue cannot be seen in isolation without looking at developments in the region, but also on the Cyprus problem.
“We had the pleasure to meet today with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Cyprus, where we put forth AKEL’s positions in relation to the Palestinian issue. We stressed the need for a lasting solution which should be based on the existence of two states on the basis of the 1967 borders, but also the need to stop any actions victimizing the Palestinian people as happened recently in Gaza,” he said. At the same time, he added, we condemned phenomena of terrorism wherever they may come from and which hinder developments and do not help, first and foremost, the Palestinian people themselves.
In relation to the Cyprus problem, Mr. Christofides said that during the meeting Turkey’s actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus were once again denounced, pointing out that all this will only be overcome with the achievement of an overall solution to the problem that meets the needs and beliefs of the people of Cyprus as a whole.
“We have called for the support of Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council in this effort to solve the Cyprus problem and I am glad that on many issues there is a convergence of views on the positions expressed by the Russian Ambassador,” he said.
In conclusion, he said that the AKEL Delegation includes a meeting today with French Ambassador, tomorrow with the Ambassador of China and at a later stage with the ambassadors of the US and Britain. “With this initiative we want to send a message of peace, cooperation in the region and the prevalence of International Law,” he concluded.
The AKEL Delegation also included Costas Christodoulides, Head of the International and European Affairs Department of the C.C. of AKEL, and the members of the Department Elias Demetriou and Haris Pasias.
