
On the AKEL delegation contacts in New York

The delegation of AKEL, headed by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, continues its contacts in the United States.
Yesterday, Wednesday 9th March it had a courteous meeting in New York with Archbishop Demetrios of America. The AKEL delegation subsequently had political meetings with the Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations Alexis Lamek and the Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN Katerina Boura.
During the meetings held, the General Secretary of AKEL discussed the current developments on the Cyprus problem. He stressed the crucial role of the international community and particularly the countries which are permanent members of the United Nations Security Council in the on-going procedure, whose main contribution must be to exert pressure on Turkey so that it plays a constructive and conciliatory role in the procedure to solve the Cyprus problem. Reference was also made to the determined stand of AKEL to support the procedure of the negotiations so long as they are based on principles and on the agreed framework of the solution.
Today the delegation of AKEL will continue its contacts holding meetings with the Permanent Missions of Russia and the United Kingdom, as well as with representatives of the Communist Party of the USA CPUSA. During the evening, the delegation of AKEL will attend a dinner with members of the Federation of Overseas Cypriots who will be briefed about the developments on the Cyprus problem.
