AKEL continues its contacts in Brussels

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou continued his contacts in Brussels.
First he had a meeting with Mr. Gianni Pitella, President of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament whom he briefed on the great destruction caused by the fires raging in Cyprus and on the efforts to extinguish them. Regarding the Cyprus problem, the General Secretary of AKEL informed Mr. Pitella about the current state of play with regards the negotiations, stressing the need for pressures to be exerted on both Turkey and Mr. Erdogan in order to find a just, viable and workable solution of the Cyprus problem soon.
In a meeting he had with the President of the Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left Gabi Zimmer the General Secretary of AKEL also discussed developments on the Cyprus problem, the situation created by the fires in Cyprus and developments in Europe. Andros Kyprianou thanked GUE/NGL for the steadfast and timeless support it is rendering to the Cypriot people and its struggles.
In a meeting with the European Commissioner Ch. Stylianides the procedures that the Republic of Cyprus must follow in order to make an application for assistance from the EU Solidarity Fund were discussed, while Mr. Stylianides explained the preconditions that exist in order for the funds from the Fund to be given. The Commissioner and the General Secretary of AKEL agreed that this application and procedure must be done immediately as the damage from the fires is very high. A. Kyprianou also briefed his Cypriot Commissioner on the Cyprus problem, urging him to convey the concerns of the Greek Cypriot side to the relevant European officials and the need for pressures to be put on Turkey so that convergences are achieved.
Finally, A. Kyprianou met with the Deputy Head of the Office of Mr. Juncker Carla – Martinez Almperola whom he briefed about the destruction caused by the fires in Cyprus and on the developments surrounding the Cyprus problem, stressing that we as the Greek Cypriot side have the political determination and will for a solution, therefore, pressures must be exerted on Turkey and Mr. Erdogan.
The General Secretary of AKEL was accompanied in his meetings by the member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL Toumazos Tsielepis.
