This is a critical moment for the institutions and the rule of law
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
The Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General should have stepped down yesterday
18 June 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The Anti-Corruption Authority’s findings on the “State-Mafia” mark a critical moment for the institutions and the rule of law in our country. If the triangle of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Presidency, and DISY manages once again to cover up the system of entanglement—that is, the N. Anastasiadis system—nothing will be left standing.
- The Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General must go home—yesterday! As long as they remain in their positions, there can be no objective and impartial investigation, since, according to the Constitution, any criminal investigation will ultimately be subject to the Attorney General’s discretion. It is an insult to the intelligence of the citizens to be told that Anastasiades will be investigated by two of his own henchmen.
- The DISY leadership must understand how shameful it is to continue covering up for Nicos Anastasiades and his system. Obviously, they do so because, as a party, they are part of that very system. After all, N. Anastasiades is under investigation for criminal offenses committed while he was a DISY MP, the leader of DISY and President of the DISY government. This is why DISY insists that the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General should remain in their positions. That’s the only way Anastasiades—and they themselves—will be protected. DISY President Annita Demetriou should give citizens an answer to the following question: Is she still proud of her party’s Honorary President, and will she proudly bring him back onto podiums?
- As for Nikos Christodoulides, he should at long last realize that the system exposed in the Report concerns the government of which he was a key member; it concerns his political mentor—the very person who installed him in the Presidential Palace.
Every citizen of this country, whatever their political affiliation may be—or even if they have none—must raise their voice. The impunity, the cover-ups, and the audacity of this system must be broken.
AKEL will continue resolutely and unwaveringly on this path.
