How can justice be served when the institutions are corrupted by the Anastasiades system?
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
The Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General must resign immediately
17 June 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The Anti-Corruption Authority’s findings have confirmed what everyone already knows about the actions and days of Nicos Anastasiades and the DISY government: entanglement/interwoven interests, the humiliation of the state, the manipulation of institutions, abuse of power, scandals, conflicts of interest—all of this to orchestrate a billion-dollar feast on the backs of the people. The Cypriot people did not need to wait for the report to learn who Nicos Anastasiades is and that his administration is a disgrace to the country. Now, however, with the Anti-Corruption Authority’s report, all the others—namely his accomplices and defenders—are being judged anew and exposed.
- It is not enough for the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General to recuse themselves from the investigation. They must resign, immediately. According to the Constitution, any criminal investigation will ultimately be decided by the Attorney General. How can there be an objective and impartial procedure while the leadership of the Prosecutor’s Office consists of two individuals appointed by Nicos Anastasiades, who were themselves members of the government that set up this entire web of corruption?
- How long will the DISY leadership continue to hide? Do they really think they’re convincing anyone when they safely declare that they definitely want an investigation, even though they know the Prosecutor’s Office is in the hands of the Anastasiades system? Are they still proud of Nicos Anastasiades and his government? And finally, when they claim they saved the country, do they mean this sea of scandals and corruption?
- Does Nicos Christodoulides really insist that the Anastasiades government was not corrupt? Does he realize how exposed he himself is as a child and a product of this system?
AKEL is making it clear to everyone that we will do everything in our power to ensure that Nikos Anastasiades and his inner circle do not escape justice this time either. We must not permit his tentacles to obstruct the work of prosecution and justice. This is the very least we owe to the Cypriot people, who, while suffering haircuts (on their bank deposits), foreclosures, and impoverishment, watched as a corrupt elite amassed staggering wealth.
