To combat the decay that is suffocating our country, institutions must at long last start functioning properly
5 February 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
To combat the corruption and decay that is suffocating our country, we need institutions to at long last start functioning and break down the barriers. Zero tolerance, activation of legislation and procedures, genuine investigation of every complaint and allegation made of wrongdoing by politicians and government officials.
We note that, even after days of procrastination, the two Mayors under investigation for serious crimes, rape, and domestic violence, have finally been suspended. At the same time, we reiterate for the umpteenth time that the other DISY Mayor, Chr. Zannetos of Ayia Napa, who is on trial in the Criminal Court for forgery and embezzlement of funds through false representations in relation to European funds.
The elephant in the room, of course, remains the Presidency and the Attorney General’s Office. We have yet to see any answers or accountability for “videogate” from the Presidency. The donors to the First Lady’s Fund remain a closely guarded secret. The findings on corruption in the Cyprus Football Association have been sent to the Attorney General’s Office. If those in power think that these issues will be forgotten or covered up, they should realize that they will find AKEL and the overwhelming majority of society opposing them.
