Left Group MEP’s sent a strong message in favor of the reunification of Cyprus from occupied Famagusta

The Left Group MEP’s sent a strong message in favor of the reunification of Cyprus from occupied Famagusta.

The MEP’s from the Left Group in the European Parliament, who are currently in Cyprus, visited occupied Famagusta yesterday, Wednesday. The aim of the visit to occupied Famagusta was for the Left MEP’s to see on the ground for themselves the dramatic reality of the occupation and the ongoing siege of the enclosed city of Famagusta, an issue that is often raised in the European Parliament.

The Mayor of Famagusta, Simos Ioannou, accompanied the MEP’s briefed them on the history of the city and the issue of Famagusta, which constitutes a special aspect of the Cyprus problem, as defined by the relevant UN Resolutions. At the same time, the Left MEP’s met with the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage in Cyprus within the city walls and also met with the mayor of the Turkish Cypriots of the city, Suleyman Ulucay.

In their statements, the MEP’s from the Left Group sent messages of solidarity with Cyprus’ struggle against the occupation and de facto partition. Furthermore, they expressed their support for initiatives to bring Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots closer together, as well as to the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis and framework, for the liberation and reunification of the island.
