AKEL denounces the attempt to vindicate Grivas

Every year on this day, we witness the same spectacle. The leadership of the Democratic Rally party DISY, hand in hand with the ultra-right party ELAM and representatives of the Christodoulides government, praise the leader of EOKA B, Grivas, in Limassol.

The Right and the ultra-right, united, are marching on the same path of jingoistic pseudo-patriotic rhetoric and empty slogans about “irredeemable fatherlands”. No matter how hard they try to distort our country’s history, the treachery that was committed in the summer of 1974 cannot be erased. It is engraved on the side of the (visible occupied) Pentadaktylos mountain range, on the graves of the heroes of the democratic resistance and freedom.

A greater provocation is the presence of the government — this year through the Presidential Commissioner — indeed at a time when efforts are underway to create conditions for the resumption of the talks for a solution of the Cyprus problem, for liberation, and reunification.

Even more so this concerns the leadership of the Democratic Party (DIKO) which must give a reply, given  that today as it was honoring the democratic resistance at another event, the government DIKO supports and participates in was laying wreaths and honoring the destroyer of Cyprus, Grivas.

DIKO cannot at the same time be both the perpetrator and the victim. It must make absolutely clear to the Cypriot people how far its shift to the Right can go.

AKEL will remain a consistent defender of the historical truth.

AKEL will continue to fight for the vindication of the sacrifices of our people’s heroes. A vindication that will only come through liberation from the occupation and the reunification of our homeland and people.
