AKEL on the meeting between the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar and the leaders of the two communities

28 January 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Initial indications following the joint meeting of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Cyprus María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar with the leaders of the two communities suggest that no substantial progress has been made that would lead to breaking the deadlock with a view to resuming substantive negotiations. Pending an official briefing, there appears to be a slowdown in the whole procedure, which is worrying.

AKEL believes that it is necessary to intensify contacts and meetings between the leaders of the two communities, as well as between the two negotiators. Despite the obvious obstacles and difficulties, the goal of restarting a substantive dialogue must remain our community’s primary objective. Strengthening the efforts to achieve results with regards the Confidence Building Measures, and in particular the opening of checkpoints, will be helpful, without of course replacing the need for the resumption of substantive negotiations from the point at which they were interrupted in 2017, with the entire negotiating acquis safeguarded and the negotiation of the pending issues completed on the basis of the Guterres Framework.
