24 January 2026, Astra radio station

Today marks the official beginning of AKEL’s election campaign for the upcoming parliamentary elections in May with the presentation of the candidates of AKEL – Left – Social Alliance, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas underlined. Speaking on Astra radio, the Party’s press spokesperson spoke of a strong candidate list consisting of distinguished and honest people, marked by a significant increase in the participation of women and young people, while combining experience and renewal.

As Giorgos Koukoumas said, about 70% of the candidates are running for the first time, the participation of women has increased to 38%, 20% come from the Social Alliance, and the average age on the ticket is 43, with candidates as young as 23. He stressed that these are people from political struggle, trade unions, the cultural arena, and working professionals in their fields who can represent the principles and values of the left.

Furthermore, the AKEL Press Spokesperson also said that the AKEL candidate list can appeal not only to the Left but also more broadly to the progressive spectrum of the country, noting that they are receiving positive comments about the ballot in all districts.

Today’s candidate presentation event will take place at 11 a.m. at the Satirico Theatre in Aglantzia. The keynote speaker will be the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou. The event will be broadcast live on Astra, RIK2, and AKEL’s social media accounts.

At the same time, commenting on yesterday’s RAI poll, Giorgos Koukoumas stressed that AKEL increased its strength by 1.5 points from the previous poll. He added that despite the fluidity of the situation and the dangerous rise of the far right, AKEL remains steadfast, with 65% rallying support four months before the elections and before the Party has even begun its work among the people. Giorgos Koukoumas also said that there is a connection and identification between voters and the positions being put forward by AKEL.
