AKEL on International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

16 May 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

On the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, AKEL reiterates that it will continue to fight discrimination, violence and oppression based on sexual orientation.

In the 21st century, thousands of people in our country and millions around the world continue to suffer violence, institutional discrimination, humiliation and stereotypes that are still rooted in the laws and practices of the state and in social perceptions. Recent research carried out by the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency records an increase in incidents of violence and attacks on LGBTI people across Europe.

At a time when racism, xenophobia, homophobia and sexism are poisoning European societies with hatred, the Left is responding to regression and conservatism with the values of equality, solidarity and progress.
