Cyprus ranks bottom of the table on sustainable development
Cyprus’ developmental model must be reshaped
21 February 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The latest European Sustainable Development Report ranks Cyprus at the bottom of the relevant table. The country has failed to address the challenges in the tax system, climate change, digital transition and a number of other economic and social indicators.
Unfortunately, the developmental model of the Cyprus economy in recent years has been based on anarchic growth and circumstantial profit, which on the one hand has led to an increase in overall production, but at the same time has exacerbated social and income inequalities.
Recent figures that have been released underline the demand of AKEL and the overwhelming majority of the country’s economic and social forces for a reshaping of the developmental model.
The government must provide an answer concerning the quality of development and at long last include the fulfilment of the goals for sustainable development in its economic policy agenda.
