The Government’s measures are not sufficient to confront price hikes and expensiveness

21 February 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The extension of the measures announced by the government, although necessary, is not sufficient to address the challenges society is facing as a whole, and in particular the wave of price hikes.

We point out the limited duration of the support measures for electricity and fuel. However, as long as the government does not address in a structural sense the problem of high energy costs by bringing in natural gas for power generation purposes and conducting a tendering procedure in renewable energy, households and businesses will continue to be saddled with the ongoing increased costs.

In relation to the additional measures announced we will study them, however we note the repetition of announcements limited to one-off measures, the absence of measures for pensioners on low pensions and the very limited fiscal intensity compared to the support provided by the rest of the EU countries, as well as in relation to the increased revenues collected by the state due to the increase in the price of goods.

Society has no need of measures in small amounts, but instead the implementation of a more comprehensive policy that reduces energy costs, provides affordable housing and social support.
