The government is doing nothing while the roller coaster of high prices are overwhelming
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
30 September 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
While in most European countries inflation is falling, in Cyprus it is rising and in fact, last month, it recorded the highest rise in inflation across the entire Eurozone. These are the findings of Eurostat’s specific figures which reveal the consequences of the Christodoulides government’s decision to end the measures on electricity and fuel, but also its refusal to elaborate a comprehensive plan to deal with price inflation.
At a time when high prices and expensiveness are crushing society, the government says it is looking into the issue and will take measures … “if the need arises”. The fact that the government ruling forces have not realised that there is a long-standing, urgent and pressing need for measures to be taken is part of the problem. The government has had AKEL’s proposals before it for months now, which even indicate the sources of funding for social measures to be taken. It also has before it the demands of the entire trade union movement and society in general.
In other words, there are ways to confront high prices. There are resources. Needs obviously exist. What does not exist is the will on the part of the government, which is standing idly by while the roller coaster of high prices is eroding the income of households, working people and small businesses.
