Within the framework of AKEL’s ongoing “Home for All” campaign, a Party delegation met with the board and officials of the Equal Distribution of Burdens Central Agency and the Director and officials of the Service for the Care and Rehabilitation of Displaced Persons.

AKEL’s recognition of the work of the two organisations and their efforts to upgrade their role and support displaced persons and the owners of properties in the occupied areas was expressed.

During the meeting with the Central Agency for Equal Distribution of Burdens, AKEL reiterated its insistence on the preparation of a compensation scheme for the loss of use [of these properties] and pointed out AKEL’s commitment to creating a financial basis for the implementation of such a scheme by imposing a 0.4% tax on the sales of real estate properties.

AKEL also urged the Agency to take the initiative to engage in the process of rebuilding the 43 dangerous refugee buildings, at least for the cases of the owners of properties in occupied territories.

During the meeting with the Displaced Persons Care and Rehabilitation Service, the need to increase the funds allocated as a housing grant was stressed given the rising costs. In addition, it was also noted that the amount of the rent subsidy does not correspond to the reality of rent prices, particularly for the districts of Limassol and Nicosia.

The AKEL delegation consisted of Evanthia Savva, Head of the Social Policy Sector of AKEL, Nikos Kettiros, AKEL MP for Famagusta, Christos Christofias, MP for Kyrenia, Giorgos Vassiliou, Head of the AKEL Refugee Office and Chrystalla Karolou, AKEL Parliamentary Assistant.
