Three questions to the government on fuel prices
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
23 June 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The two-Euro barrier on fuel has been surpassed too, but apparently the government’s least concern is that society is being crushed by the price increases. We pose three questions to the government and the ruling DISY party and expect to hear replies.
- We have demanded that the government must provide data on the profit rate of fuel companies and the formation of prices, so that it can be determined whether or not profiteering does exist. Why do the government ruling forces continue to keep these figures and data hidden? What are they afraid of and who are they covering up for?
- We have proposed the abolition of the double taxation on fuel and the strengthening of legislation for a cap on fuels. What other excuses do the government ruling forces have left to give us to prevent the adoption of these measures? As if the fact that instead of the government working on confronting the issue of price rises, it is the opposition that is actually elaborating proposals and solutions, which they reject in order not to offend powerful private interests.
- AKEL calls for the imposition of extraordinary taxation on the “windfall profits” of energy companies, as other European countries have done. What is the position of the government and the other parties?
