Statements by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL S.Stefanou during his visit to the offices of SPAVO

We are today delivering a symbolic contribution to the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO). We too want to help as much as we can and support SPAVO’s activities on an extremely important issue related to violence in the family.

Violence in the family is a major social problem which, due to recent circumstances, including the pandemic, has become more acute.

To confront it, a coherent and comprehensive state policy is demanded, which unfortunately, in our opinion, does not exist and must be elaborated so that we can collectively and decisively deal with a very serious problem whose biggest victims are usually women and children.

You as non-governmental organisations and associations – and on this issue as on others – are filling the gaps in the state infrastructures and state policies that are lacking, so we must not only congratulate you, but support you too so that you can continue your activity.

At the same time, we, as AKEL, will continue, through our political actions, to support both inside and outside Parliament, and continue to put pressure on the government for a comprehensive and coherent policies, approaches and political infrastructures in order to confront the problem. It goes without saying that we believe you have an important role to play within this overall policy.
