The government doesn’t understand what price hikes, poverty and economic misery mean
Statement by Haris Polycarpou, AKEL Political Bureau member
19 October 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The Anastasiades-DISY government and the Minister of Finance do not understand – or pretend not to understand – what price hikes, poverty and economic hardship mean. Whatever happens, the result is unfortunately the same – they are unable to provide support and give a perspective to society.
Otherwise, when the European Commission is making recommendations to member states about the increased cost of electricity, N. Anastasiades and the DISY government would have made sure that measures would be taken instead of pretending that they aren’t listening
When price hikes are eroding working people’s wages, the Minister of Finance should be discussing measures to provide support to working people instead of urging them to leave misery behind.
At a time when Cyprus is in danger of finding itself without basic food and goods, the government would desperately be trying to fill the gap, instead of hiding behind its finger serving economic interests.
For AKEL, the primary concern was and remains providing support to working people and the economy. Therefore, instead of the government trying day and night to reply to AKEL, it would be better if they would listen to what AKEL is actually proposing.
